March Wellbeing Tip: Healthy Eating On A Budget

According to the Centers for Disease Control & Prevention (CDC), good nutrition is essential for well-being across all stages of life. A nutritious diet consists of primarily whole foods which include unprocessed fruits and vegetables, nuts, seeds, whole grains, beans and legumes. Unfortunately, a whole foods diet can seem expensive, especially as prices continue to rise. Here are three ways that you can prioritize eating healthy on a budget:

  1. Plan out your weekly meals and shop with a list so you don’t buy extra at the grocery store.
  2. Buy frozen or canned goods as a healthy alternative to fresh produce. Frozen fruits and vegetables cost less and have a longer shelf life. Look for low sodium canned vegetable options and fruit that is packed in 100% juice or water.
  3. Check stores for weekly deals and coupons. Try out fruits and vegetables that are on sale. Your local farmers market may also have delicious and affordable seasonal produce.

March is also Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month. Colon cancer is largely preventable through regular screening. According to the American Cancer Society, limiting red and processed meats and eating more vegetables, fruits and whole grains may help lower your risk of developing colon cancer. If you are 45 years or older, talk to your doctor about colorectal cancer screening. If you need help finding a doctor, our Find a Doctor tool can help you get started.
